Serkis toured with several theatre companies after receiving his Equity card. He was prepared to settle in London by the 1990s, when he performed in some of the most prestigious theatres in the city. He also began landing his first TV roles at this time, making appearances in series like The Darling Buds of May in the early 1990s. After that, Serkis starred in the 1997 movie Loop and subsequently in the television version of Oliver Twist. He costarred with Sacha Baron Cohen in the 2000 film The Jolly Boy's Last Stand.

Even while he gained recognition from these performances, it wasn't until 2001 that Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy marked his real career breakthrough. Andy portrayed Gollum in these movies, introducing the world to the potential of motion capture technology in acting.

This feat opened up other options for Serkis. He played the title character in the 2005 film King Kong. He later played the ape Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, a role he later reprised in two follow-up films. Both of them were CGI characters. Andy showed his ability in several live-action roles as well, including the character of a serial killer in the 2006 film Longford. During this time, Serkis also developed his voice acting career.

Serkis has been active behind the camera alongside his acting roles. He and Jonathan Cavendish formed The Imaginarium Studios in 2011. The studio specialises in Performance Capture technology. Andy worked in The Hobbit movies as the second unit director before directing his first feature, Breathe.
