Bong Joon-Ho is a popular South-Korean director known for mixing different genres and highlighting social issues. He was born on September 14, 1969, in Daegu, South Korea. In 1995, he graduated from Yonsei University, where he studied sociology before pursuing a career in filmmaking. During his time at Yonsei University, he co-founded a film club called Yellow Door along with other students.


He studied filmmaking at the Korean Academy of Film Arts. He made many short films, and his graduation films were also screened at international film festivals. Over the years, his films have received international recognition. His films often explore themes of class struggle, corruption, and human nature through stories with suspense, humor, and drama. Over the years, Bong Joon-Ho has directed 8 feature films known for mixing different genres, social commentary, and unexpected twists. Bong Joon-ho’s debut film was Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), a dark comedy-drama about an unemployed man who gets annoyed by a noisy dog in his apartment building. The film received praises from the critics and won awards at the Slamdance Film Festival and Hong Kong International Film Festival.


He got his breakthrough with the film Memories of Murder (2003), a crime thriller based on real serial murders. He gained further recognition with The Host (2006), a monster movie that mixed horror, satire, and family drama. In 2013, he made his Hollywood debut with the film Snowpiercer, a dystopian sci-fi film starring Chris Evans. In 2017, he directed a Netflix film Okja, which was a social commentary on corporate greed and animal rights.


In 2019, he directed a South Korean film Parasite which premiered at the Cannes film festival. The film was successful at the box office worldwide and gained international popularity. The film won 4 Academy Awards, becoming the 1st non-English-language film to win the Oscar for Best Picture. Recently, he directed the film Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, which was released on March 7, 2025.
