In 2003, Joon Ho joined the Democratic Labour Party, which he left in March 2008. He was an active member of the party. Following his exit from the party, he joined the New Progressive Party, which was established by some of the members of the Democratic Labour Party. Even after leaving active politics, Joon-ho remained a strong voice. In 2024, he, along with more than 2000 employees of the South Korean film industry, demanded an impeachment of then-president Yoon Suk Yeol for declaration of martial law.


Joon Ho is a fan of K-pop, and his favourite group is “Blackpink”. His son, Bong Hyo Min, is also a filmmaker. Joon-ho has a tattoo on his left arm - of a bird, which he did to pay homage to a scene from his own film - “Mother” (2009).
