Ncuti Gatwa is a Rwandan-Scottish actor known for his roles in “Doctor Who (2023)” and “Sex Education (2019).” Born on October 15, 1992, in Nyarugenge, Kigali, Rwanda, Gatwa grew up in Edinburgh and Dunfermline. He attended Boroughmuir High School and Dunfermline High and holds a bachelor's degree in acting from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. Following his graduation, he joined the Dundee Repertory Theatre’s graduation scheme. He played Demetrius in the Shakespeare’s Globe rendition of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in 2016. Gatwa’s television journey began in 2014 with the mini-series “Bob Servant,” where he appeared in a minor role as a male customer.

However, it was his portrayal of Eric Effiong in Netflix’s teen comedy drama “Sex Education” that brought him wide recognition. He says, “It was healing for me, and great for people to see themselves represented. It taught me the importance of representation: it’s so powerful and necessary.”

He joined as a lead in the sci-fi fantasy series “Doctor Who” in 2023. In an interview with GQ , when asked to describe his take on the iconic character, Gatwa replied with a grin, “I would describe the Doctor as a black man.” It is a significant moment, as he plays the Fifteenth Doctor and made history as the first man of color to portray the role.
