Max Minghella is an English actor who plays Nick Blaine in Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid's Tale”. His movie credits include David Fincher's “The Social Network” (2010) and Damian Chazelle’s “Babylon” (2022). Minghella is also a writer and director. He made his directorial debut with the 2018 movie “Teen Spirit”.

Max Minghella's father, Anthony Minghella, was a famous English director. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for the movie “The English Patient” (1996). He also directed the Matt Damon starrer “The Very Talented Mr Ripley” (1999) and also the romantic war drama “Cold Mountain” (2003). Minghella played an extra in the latter. Anthony Minghella died in March 2008 at the age of 54.
In an interview, Minghella was asked if his father ever thought he would become a director by himself one day, to which the actor said:
"I really would be interested to ask him that now. He knew that I was shooting stuff because he would like to look at my little things. I'd be editing a final cut and he would peek over my shoulder. But I think he really did see me as an actor.”
In another interview given to Bustle, Minghella credited his father’s films for growing up as a romantic. He has extensively spoken about how he used to absorb his father's movies at a very young age. Minghella shared:
It’s taken me a long time to understand this. My dad made The English Patient when I was 10. So it was two years of watching the dailies to that movie and then watching 50 cuts of it. And then [The Talented Mr.] Ripley he made when I was 13, and it was the same thing.”
He further added:
“I think they did shape my perspective on the world in a lot of ways, specifically The English Patient. That was a complicated love story, and I wonder sometimes how much it's affected my psychology.”
Minghella is English, but he is also of Italian and Chinese origin from his father's and mother's sides. His mother Carolyn Choa is a famous choreographer. Talking about his mother, Minghella said:
"My mother's a fascinating, wildly intelligent person who — I don't know how to say this — she's very Chinese. She's of a different culture and really carries that with her."

Minghella's half-sister, Hannah, is a studio executive and producer who used to work in Bad Robot before moving to Netflix as the Head of Feature Animation and Family Film. She is the daughter of Anthony Minghella and his former wife, Yvonne Miller.
