Morgan Freeman has a deep connection to his Mississippi roots, as he attended high school there. After becoming an actor, he stayed in New York for a few years. After gaining recognition for his work and receiving Oscar nominations for his films, he decided to move to Mississippi. In 1991, Freeman bought land from his parents which was owned by them and his grandparents.

He built a hacienda-style home on the site of 124 acres near Charleston, Mississippi. The mansion has 2 storeys which include a large lake, a helipad, and a golf course. The kitchen of the mansion is built in a functional and stylish manner with top appliances and big counter space. It also includes a tennis court, a gazebo, and a large pool for outdoor entertainment.

He has an interest in horses, and as a passionate horseman, he keeps several mounts on his land and maintains the ranch as a working farm with horses and other livestock. According to Forbes, in 2014, he converted his ranch into a bee sanctuary. Freeman brought 26 beehives from Arkansas and planted bee-friendly plants like magnolia trees, lavender, and clover to support the bee population.
