Steven Yeun’s parents are Je Yeun and June Yeun. They are South Korean immigrants who moved to the United States for a better life. His father worked as an architect in South Korea, but when they moved to the United States, he started a new career. Steven’s parents owned a beauty supply business in Michigan, where Steven grew up. They worked hard to support their family and give their children a good future.

Steven has spoken about how his parents wanted him to have a stable job, like a doctor or lawyer. In an interview with Interview magazine, he said, “Well, my parents originally wanted me to become a doctor—that’s why I was in school; I was pre-med, and I graduated with a degree in psychology and a concentration in neuroscience. Really, the plan was for me to go to med school.” At first, they were unsure about his decision to become an actor. But after seeing his success in The Walking Dead and other projects, they became proud of him.

In an interview with Ellen, he shared his parents’ reaction. He said, “No, my parents are Korean, and traditionally, that first generation of Korean Americans aren’t too happy with the little curveball that you throw them when you’re a kid.” After his success, he shared how his parents were proud and gave him a lot of advice. He said, “My dad wanted me to wear a suit everywhere I went.” He further explained how his father wanted him to wear suits everywhere, even when he was going out to buy oranges. He said, “He’s like, ‘You should get a suit … what if they get you and then you’re not in a suit? Then you look stupid.'”

Steven has 2 children with his wife, Joana Pak. The couple got married in 2016 after dating for 7 years. They paid respect to their Korean culture and wore traditional Korean dresses in their wedding. Steven shared with Martha Stewart Weddings about their wedding and said, “Very relaxed and focused on a greater message of love.” They welcomed their 1st child, a son, in 2017; his name is Jude Malcolm. A few years later, they had a 2nd child, a daughter, in 2019; her name is Ruthie Malcolm.

He and his wife try to give their kids a normal life away from the spotlight. During his speech at Golden Globe, he mentioned his daughter and said, "The story I usually tell of myself, to myself, is one of isolation and separateness and then you come up here and you have this moment, and you can only just think about everyone else and that feels like the plot of Frozen." He added, "Shoutout to my daughter Ruthie, family movie night!"

Steven Yeun has talked about how much he loves being a father and how his children bring him joy. In an interview with People, he shared how he and his wife managed their kids during lockdown. He said, "Quarantine with an almost 4-year-old and an almost 2-year-old was quite a year. It makes it two times harder, just like simple math. It's just harder.” He further added, "I think this last year was like me and my wife just learn to accept your face and how tired it looks at all times, and we just don't have any clothes without stains on it, and that's just like life."
