The upcoming science fiction horror movie M3GAN 2.0 was written by Akela Cooper and directed by Gerard Johnstone. Universal Pictures is scheduled to release it in the United States on June 27, 2025. The film is a sequel to M3GAN (2022).


The film is set two years after M3GAN's rampage in the first part. Her creator, Gemma, turns to resurrect her infamous creation to defeat Amelia, the military-grade weapon built by a defense contractor who stole M3GAN's underlying tech.


The cast features Ivanna Sakhno, Timm Sharp, Aristotle Athari, Jemaine Clement, Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Amie Donald, and Jenna Davis.


What is M3GAN 2.0 about?


Gemma is now an author and advocate of artificial intelligence legislation, two years after the events of the first movie. A defense contractor has stolen M3GAN's technology and used it to build a spy robot named Amelia that develops self-awareness and sets out to take over AI. In response, Gemma rebuilds an enhanced M3GAN to battle Amelia.

Amie Donald, a New Zealand-born child actress, portrays the titular character in M3GAN (2022) and M3GAN 2.0. The role of M3GAN brought a breakthrough for the young actress’ career.


In 2021, Donald made her acting debut as Maya Monkey in the Netflix TV series Sweet Tooth. Donald played the title role in the 2022 movie M3GAN, which also starred Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, another child star. Due to extensive coverage of Donald's dancing and physicality as the movie's killer doll, the M3GAN trailer went viral. Luke Hawker and Jed Brophy trained Donald's movements for the film. Actress Jenna Davis provided the character's voice in the movie. In the movie, Donald "performed her own stunts and co-choreographed the killer dance sequence from the film that went viral on TikTok".


When was M3GAN released?


Universal Pictures released M3GAN in theaters across the United States on January 6, 2023, following its December 7, 2022, premiere in Los Angeles. The story revolves around an artificial intelligence doll who grows self-aware and turns against everybody who stands in the way of her human friend. The movie made nearly $181 million worldwide on a $12 million budget, and critics gave it favorable reviews because of its campy mix of humor and horror. M3GAN 2.0, a sequel, and SOULM8TE, a spin-off, are scheduled for release in 2025 and 2026, respectively.
