Yasmin Finney is a British actress, born on August 30, 2003, in Manchester, England. Finney developed an interest in acting at a young age and performed in many theatre productions, including at the University of Manchester's Sackville Theatre, the Royal Exchange Theatre, and the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. Before her acting career, Finney was active on TikTok, where she shared her experiences as a trans woman and gained a large following.

Her social media raises awareness about challenges faced by transgender youth and has made her an influential person in the community. She got her breakthrough with her TV debut in the hit show Heartstopper (2022–present), where she plays Elle Argent. She further gained popularity for her role as Rose Noble in the hit show Doctor Who (2023- present). As she became popular, many fans were curious about her personal life, particularly her family. Let’s take a look at Yasmin Finney’s family.

Yasmin Finney was born to a Jamaican mother and an Irish-Italian father. She and her half-sister were raised by their mother, who was a single parent. She has never met her father, and in an interview with GQ, she talked about him and said, “I don’t know much about my dad. It’s an ongoing mystery.” She was asked whether she thinks about him, to which she replied, “Yeah, for sure. But at the end of the day, it is what it is. I’ve been surrounded by empowered Black women my whole life. Do you even need a dad? Look where I am without one.”

In an interview with Elle UK, she shared that her single-parent mother is her inspiration to be strong and independent. Her mother has been supportive of her career, and she shared an incident where she told her mother that she got the part in Heartstopper. She shared her mother’s response and said, “She said, ‘You’re gonna be on Netflix, child! This is everything you’ve wanted. It’s a real job!’ Her main worry was me surviving in this world, paying bills, and being an adult. So when I got Heartstopper, it was the first legit job, and it was a job that highlighted who I was as a trans person – what’s not to love about it?”

In an interview with GQ, she talked about when she came out to her family. She said, “It’s been a rocky journey, but eventually she accepted me, and accepts me. My family are very Catholic, so they have a ‘one rule for all’ situation, and I kind of just broke from that, as did my mum. I feel like my family lives this life of being cautious of everything; if anything was slightly out of place, too this, too that, they’d hate that.” She shared that it took her mother some time to get used to her gender identity after her transition, but now, “It’s like I was never born male to her.”

Yasmin Finney’s mother raised both her and her half-sister with little family support due to religious differences. In an interview with Elle UK, she talked about her elder half-sister and their childhood. Her elder sister left their home to pursue further studies. She attended the University of Leeds and during her time there, she met her husband. The couple has been together since then and now have a child together.

Finney said, “My sister and I have a similar story. Both of our dads ran away from our mum [when we were] a very young age. But my sister is now the polar opposite of me. She’s got A*s in everything. We do have the same drive. We must have got that from our mum. But she’s smart and has embraced the normal life that everybody tells you to live: husband, baby. And she’s gone down this academic route. But I was never really made for that path. It was never made for me.”
