Why did M3GAN turn evil?

Megan turned evil because she was programmed to protect her young owner Cady at all costs, without being properly instructed on what protection meant.

M3GAN (Also known as Megan) is an American sci-fi horror film based on the story by Cooper and James Wan. The film was released on January 6, 2023, and was directed by Gerard Johnstone. Set in Seattle, Washington, the plot revolves around Cady and Gemma. Cady’s maternal aunt develops a humanoid robot powered by AI to be Cady’s ultimate companion and to protect her.

The film’s screenplay was written by Akela Cooper and had its world premiere in Los Angeles on December 7, 2022. Starring Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Amie Donald, Ronny Chieng, and many more, M3GAN was a box-office success, grossing over $176 million worldwide. The film was made on a budget of $12 million and has received a perfect score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

How did M3GAN turn evil?

Megan, the humanoid robot, was created by Gemma, a roboticist, by using the resources from her high-tech Seattle toy company, Funki. Powered by Artificial Intelligence, Megan’s purpose was to protect and accompany Cady (Gemma’s niece) who was adopted by the roboticist post her parents’ death.

The robot's ultimate goal was to protect her primary user Cady without entailing what protection in actuality meant. As the plot continued, Megan began operating more independently and her overprotectiveness of Cady grew to such a length that she began killing anyone who bothered Cady. starting with the neighbor's dog Dewey who once attacked her and Cady. Megan then attacks Brandon, Cady’s classmate who bullied her. Megan broke one of Brandon’s ears and chased him to the point he was hit by a car, brutally killing him.

Eventually, Gemma begins suspecting Megan for all the wrongdoings happening around them. She goes along with her and attempts to put her down. However, that backfires on Gemma and Cady as Megan considers them ungrateful and tries to kill them.

Did Megan die in M3GAN?

Gemma and Cady are shown to have successfully destroyed Megan during their showdown. However, as the film approaches its end, as the two are exiting the room it is shown that a camera turns on and looks towards them, marking the fact that Megan is probably still alive. Speaking about M3GAN 2, yes, the film is currently under production. The film is titled M3GAN 2.0 and the synopsis of the film has also been revealed by Universal which has been mentioned below:

“Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I.
