GENERAL HOSPITAL’S BEST OF THE WEEK

MOMENTS

James’ hatchet-throwing lessons with his Oma
Bless poor Spinelli’s heart…Knowing James’ paternal line skews psychopathic, you could see his nerves fray and concerns for the future grow as he watched an enthusiastic James receive hatchet-throwing pro-tips from his loving, but morally ambiguous, grandmother, Liesl. She told James, “The key is to hone in on your target just as one does during the hunt. And, never lose sight of anything you want to achieve.” Fingers crossed, my dear Spinelli, fingers crossed.
When the truth didn’t set anyone free (at least, not yet)
Portia laid the ugly truth out for Willow about Drew’s blackmail demands to make Michael look like a drug addict. She expected outrage and disgust from Willow. She hoped to free Willow, herself, and Curtis from Drew’s hold. Instead, Willow was not horrified or even fazed and pledged her allegiance to Drew, the only person she felt she could trust.
Next, Curtis rushed into the bride’s room and dropped Nina’s secret about sleeping with Drew like he was a surprise guest on the Jerry Springer Show. He hoped to free Willow, himself, and Portia from Drew’s hold, but left before he could find out she seemingly planned to go through with the wedding anyway.
Finally, Nina had to admit to sleeping with Drew. She tried in vain to defend herself, but was told to get the hell out by Willow. Even if her relationship with Willow was destroyed, she hoped the truth would finally free Willow and herself from Drew’s hold. Convinced there wasn’t going to be a wedding, she was shocked to see Willow ready to walk down the aisle after all.
Is Willow that in love with Drew, does she have a revenge plan, or did she have a psychotic break? We’ll have to wait until next week to find out, and can only hope we get a break from blackmailing for a while.
The anvil-on-the-head moments
It only took a brief conversation with Willow for Liesl to see something was seriously off with her behavior. Portia was gobsmacked when Willow was unfazed by Drew’s bribes. Drew and Nina had their separate revelatory moments about Willow being the one targeting Michael and Sasha’s baby, and Ava physically cringed when Nina told her all about it. When your behavior mortifies some of the Who’s Who of the Broken Moral Compass Club, it’s time for a se👏ri👏ous intervention.
SCENES

Nina’s moment of truth with Willow
After finding out about Nina and Drew having an “affair”, Willow left nothing on the table when she unleashed her hurt and fury on her mother. Her final blow, saying, “I understand that you weren’t cut out to be a mother. Maybe because your own mother was a total nightmare, but you don’t have a maternal bone in your body. I envy Nell. She died never knowing you were her mother. I wish I’d been so lucky” was particularly savage. If I’m being objective, Nina pretty much deserved everything that was said and more, but because Willow willfully ignored or fought against EVERY.SINGLE.SIGN given to her for a year, she’s going to need to take some responsibility before I can feel much sympathy or grace for her.
Katelyn MacMullen and Cynthia Watros were fantastic in these scenes. MacMullen’s varied expressions revealed Willow’s shock, outrage, hurt, desperation, and tenuous grip on reality. Watros once again showed us the agony of Nina’s own actions, leading to motherhood eluding her once again.
Lucas trying to fight above his weight class
My normally sweet Lucas (Van Hansis) is spinning out and has been in attack mode for two weeks. I’m not sure what he hopes to achieve by attacking and judging Carly (Laura Wright), but it was painful to see these two fighting. I get that he’s upset, but watching him go after Sonny has been like watching a chihuahua bark at a pit bull, and he really should start reigning it in.
NOTABLES

The flower game on GH is ALWAYS on point, but the flowers for Willow and Drew’s doomed nuptials were particularly gorgeous. The cherry blossom trees, set against the arrangement of mixed red and pink-hued flowers, created a stunning and ethereal setting in the chapel. Whoever is in charge of the flowers on General Hospital deserves some special recognition!
It should be remembered that Liesl Obrecht has done some utterly reprehensible things; however, her presence makes for non-stop entertainment. Kathleen Gati plays a divine antagonist and inconvenient truth-teller who improves every scene she is in.
I’m double-downing on my love for the Portia (Brook Kerr) of the last couple of weeks. I really want her to have a chance to deliver a full smackdown to Drew.
I wonder how long they’re going to wait to reveal what was in the letter to Monica that Martin found. What do you think is said? Will it involve Erika Slezak’s arrival in Port Charles? Will she be Victoria Lord or one of six alternate personalities or someone else entirely? Writers, please don’t make us wait forever to find out!
QUOTABLES

(Side note: Kudos to the writers for Tracy, Martin, & Liesl…I wanted to quote almost everything they said this week. Alas, just like Kelly and Judy from the DCC, I had to make some difficult cuts.)
“Handling you with kid gloves is clearly not working.” - Portia getting ready to tell Willow about Drew’s blackmail
“He was in a prison jumpsuit, complete with socks and sandals, and now he sits right there (pointing toward his Brennan’s WSB Bureau Chief chair)” - Vaughn trying to make Josslyn understand how powerful Jack Brennan is.
“Oh God. We’ve just been spotted by the Janky Jurist.” - Tracy, telling Brook Lynn Martin saw them
Tracy: “Martin. You’re like a weed, you know that?” Martin: “As in tenacious, hardy, difficult to eliminate?” Tracy: “Unsightly and good for absolutely nothing.”
“Feel free to slither away to your overload” - Tracy telling Martin to go back to Drew
“I don’t do weddings anymore. After three of my own, I break into hives at the very thought.” - Martin, trying to deny Drew’s wedding invitation
“I will suck it up and be polite. We will consider it my wedding gift.” - Liesl to Elizabeth
“I’m a doctor, not a florist. And, I will not be a party to baby’s breath.” - Liesl to Nina about being asked to help with Willow’s bouquet
Elizabeth: “Did you say something uncelebratory? You promised you would be good.” Liesl: “And you promised me an open bar.” Elizabeth: “At the reception, not in the church.” Liesl: “So you proved to be untrustworthy once again.”
Kristina: “Just go strike up a conversation with him (Cody) and get Molly away from him.” Michael: “About what?” Kristina: “Anything. Sports, taxes, money. He likes money. Horses, even.”
“Thou shalt not be willfully ignorant in the Lord’s house, Ric. He might just smite you for lying.” - Ava not believing Ric about his feelings for Elizabeth
FASHION

Lois’ Nancy Print shirt & trousers by Rose & Nancy - I’m gonna call this look Tailored Boho.
Jordan’s black satin dress with lapels and puff sleeves - Professional, with a little 'zhuzh'
Molly’s Dawn bikini with Penelope sarong by TJ Swim - Such a great color & look on Molly!
Wedding fashion:

Alexis’ ivory satin wide-leg pants and ruched sleeve blazer by Anne Klein - This look was so fresh for Alexis, but still managed to stay in her style wheelhouse.
Ava’s stretch-crepe maxi dress in Green Emerald Pool by Banana Republic - Love the drape, love the asymmetrical neckline, love the color
Elizabeth’s Renzo II dress in Riviera by A.L.C. - The deep blue color of the dress against her bright lip and darker hair made for a stunning look!
Ric’s dark grey blazer with dark slate blue shirt & patterned tie - luxe tone-on-tone look
Scout’s Petal Bodice Party Dress by Bonnie Jean - Sweet & adorable!
MUSINGS

Britt (Kelly Thiebuld) is back, but that’s all we know so far. Is she involved with Sidwell and Dalton? Does Liesl know she’s alive? Who knows!?!
Poor Joss will never fully live down her Children of the Corn phase.
I generally don’t defend mobster behavior, but Sonny only took Marco for a day and did not give any orders to hurt him. There were no tauntings, no freezers, no meat hooks, no knife-happy torturers, and no trips to the pine barrens…I call that personal growth.
Some people have bottle openers on their key chains, but apparently, Lucas has a lock-picking tool for handcuffs on his. Also, why did he bother banging on the door? He already had the key to it.
The Case for Brennan & Carly - Ignoring the fact that Brennan secretly recruited Josslyn into the WSB, I genuinely like these two together. He has the potential to be her first true partner. He doesn’t try to control or manage her. He always wants to help, but doesn’t treat her like she is powerless or incapable. He encourages her to own her strength and trust her instincts. He now seems to understand Jason is off-limits, but is not insecure about it. He is not with her to spite Sonny or to use her to get to Sonny. And, on top of that, he is efficient and effective in getting problems taken care of. Hmmm…what do you think their “ship name” should be? CarJack? Jackly? JacCar? SpenBren?
