Benjamin Géza Affleck is an American actor and filmmaker best known for his appearances in film and television. Born on August 15th, 1972, Affleck was born in California but lived in Massachusetts and Cambridge alongside his parents and brother, Casey. His father, Timothy Byers, was an aspiring playwright but his parents eventually separated when Affleck was 11 years old. His mother, Christopher Anne “Chris” Boldt was a Harvard-educated elementary school teacher but thanks to his father, both Affleck brothers were surrounded by arts. He made his big-screen debut as a child actor in 1981 with the film The Dark End of the Street, before moving on to the small screen a few years later.

Affleck's career took off after he and Matt Damon won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for writing Good Will Hunting. The duo also acted in the picture, and Affleck quickly established himself as a leading actor, with major roles in Armageddon, Pearl Harbour, Hollywoodland, and several other films.

Ben Affleck’s early life and career

Ben Affleck made his debut at the age of 7. By 13, he had filmed a show in Mexico, learned Spanish in the process, and continued acting while he studied in high school and college. However, he dropped out of college when he was 18 and moved to Los Angeles where he continued his acting career and studied at the same time at Occidental College. It wasn’t until 1993 that Ben Affleck got his break with his role in Dazed and Confused. Post that, his career shot to life with his first major role coming in Glory Daze two years later and then he, alongside Matt Damon, wrote Good Will Hunting which changed his career path.

The duo won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and he remains, as of 2025, the youngest writer (25) to win an Oscar for screenwriting. Armageddon, released in 1998, established him as a leading man. This continued with Affleck earning roles in films like Pearl Harbour, Hollywoodland, and Dogma.

By the mid-2000s and early 2010s, Affleck was well-established as an actor and producer and had started establishing himself as a director with Gone Baby Gone receiving rave reviews. He also won an Oscar for Best Picture for Argo, a film he directed and starred in, and then took over the role of Batman in the DC universe.
