Bradley Whitford was born to Genevieve Smith Whitford and George Van Normal Whitford on October 10, 1959, in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. As a three-time Primetime Emmy Award winner, his career spans film, television, and theater. His role in 1999 as Josh Lyman on NBC’s critically acclaimed political drama “The West Wing,” marked his rise to prominence and earned him an Emmy in 2001 and several Golden Globe nominations.


Whitford pursued his passion for storytelling at Wesleyan University, where he studied theater and English Literature. He later on joined the prestigious Juilliard School to refine his craft and earned a Master’s degree in Theater. His early career was rooted in theater, with performances in Off-Broadway productions such as “Curse of the Starving Class,” and “A Few Good Men.” He also took the stage at the Folger Shakespeare Theatre, The Lincoln Center, and the Manhattan Theatre Club.


Whitford’s versatility as an actor is evident from his wide-ranging filmography. He played supporting roles in major dramas such as “Scent of a Woman (1992),” where he played Randy, “Philadelphia (1993),” where he played Jamey Collins, and “Presumed Innocent (1990),” where he played Jamie Kemp. He has also taken on comedic and satirical roles such as the portrayal of Hal in “The Muse (1999),” and of Carl Witnaur in “My Fellow Americans (1996).” His notable recent performances include playing Dean Armitage in Jordan Peele’s psychological horror film “Get out” and Don DaGradi in John Lee Hancock’s 2013 biographical drama film “Saving Mr. Banks.” Whitford also plays Commander Joseph Lawrence, in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale (2017).”

Whitford’s mother, Genevieve Smith Whitford, was a poet and a writer. She took up poetry and began publishing after retirement. She was the author of “The Sound of the Harp (1989)” and “Queen Anne’s Lace (1990).”


During a speech in 2024, Whitford revealed that during his school years, his father George Whitford worked at CUNA Mutual, a financial services company in Mineral Point Road. Moreover, he was also the president of Planned Parenthood in Dane County.

Whitford is currently married to American actress Amy Landecker. According to People , the couple met while filming Prime Video’s 2014 comedy-drama “Transparent” and announced their engagement during the annual celebration of the 2018 Female Oscar Nominees event. The couple tied the knot on July 17, 2019, in Santa Barbara, and have been together ever since. The pair are also co-stars on “The Handmaid’s Tale” with Whitford playing Commander Lawrence and Landecker portraying Mrs. Mackenzie.


He was also married to American actress Jane Kaczmarek for sixteen years. They married in August 1992 and separated in October 2010. Jane is a seven-time Primetime Emmy Award winner and is known for her roles in “Pleasantville (1998),” “Uncommon Valor (1983),” and CHIPS (2017).”

Whitford shares three children with his former spouse, Jane: Frances Genevieve Whitford, George Edward Whitford, and Mary Louisa Whitford.


Frances was born in January 1997, and according to their Instagram bio, is a freelance dancer, pilates instructor, and the founding member of the “Little Fire Artist Collective”.


George was born in Whitford December 1999, and has portrayed the character of Little Jack Whitford in the 2013 family drama “Savannah.”


Mary was born in November 2002 and is currently pursuing higher studies.
