Oyelowo gained fame for his roles as Peter Snowden in the HBO film Nightingale (2014) and Martin Luther King Jr. in the biographical drama film Selma (2014). David Oyelowo first appeared on television in the 1998 seasons of Brothers and Sisters and Maisie Raine. In the television series Spooks, he played Danny Hunter from 2002 until 2004. In 2007, Oyelowo played Matt Wellings, a recurring character on the television show Five Days. He provided the voice of Agent Kallus in the 2014 season of Star Wars Rebels.


He has received nominations for three Golden Globes, two Primetime Emmys, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a BAFTA Award, and two NAACP Image Awards in addition to a Critics' Choice Award. For his contributions to drama, he was titled an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2016.


David Oyelowo’s early life


David was born on 1 April 1976 in Oxford, Oxfordshire, to Nigerian parents. His mother is Igbo from South East Nigeria, and his father, Stephen, is from Oyo State in South West Nigeria. He was raised in a Baptist home. When he was six years old, his family moved to Lagos, Nigeria, where his mother worked for a railway firm and his father for the national airline. He had grown up on an estate in Tooting Bec, South London. Oyelowo admired Denzel Washington and Sidney Poitier as a child.


According to Nigeria's chieftaincy system, Oyelowo is an omoba (or prince) of the Yoruba people; his grandfather ruled "a part of Oyo State called Awe" as king. Oyelowo went to Lagos State Model College Meiran, which is currently known as Lagos State Model Junior College Meiran, a "military-style" boarding institution. When Oyelowo was fourteen, his family moved back to London and settled in Islington.


His tutor recommended that he pursue acting while he was a student at City and Islington College studying theatre. Oyelowo attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) for a year to take an acting foundation course. In 1998, his three-year training was completed. He also worked with the National Youth Theatre.
