She received a nomination for the Lucille Lortel Award and the Drama Desk Award for outstanding revival and outstanding direction for her all-female 2019 rendition of Macbeth.

Schmidt's other directing credits include Chashama (for which she won the New York International Fringe Festival Award for best direction) and The Play Company (for which she was nominated for a Callaway Award). She co-created, co-wrote, and co-directed the play Humor Abuse, for which she also received a Lucille Lortel Award.

In 2011, Schmidt and Dinklage became parents to a daughter, and in 2017, they had another child. Schmidt was pregnant when her 2017 play, All the Fine Boys, opened, but the couple has not yet revealed the sex of their second child.
