Dame Margaret Natalie Smith, well known as Maggie Smith is a British actress who rose to prominence through her comedic and dramatic roles in numerous Hollywood films over the years. Born on 28 December 1934, Smith had a passion for acting since her teen days. She left her education at Oxford High School at the age of 16 to study acting at Oxford Playhouse.


While studying there, Maggie Smith also performed on stage thus marking her theatre debut. In 1956, Maggie Smith made her Broadway debut through the show New Faces of 56’, at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Maggie Smith made her Hollywood debut in 1959 as Bridget Howard in the film Nowhere to Go. The film was also her first screen credit.

Maggie Smith passed away at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, on 27 September 2024 and was 89 years old at the time of passing. She passed away peacefully with her family and friends around her. There was no specific information relating to how she passed.


The news of her demise was communicated to her fans by her sons through a statement. The statement read, “She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”


King Charles III issued a message mourning the news of Smith's death. The statement read, “My wife and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dame Maggie Smith. As the curtain comes down on a national treasure, we join all those around the world in remembering with the fondest admiration and affection her many great performances, and her warmth and wit that shone through both on and off the stage”.
