Berk in How to Train Your Dragon is the village where Hiccup and the Vikings from his tribe live.

How to Train Your Dragon is an animated movie series adapted from the novels of the same name written by British author Cressida Cowell. The series has a total of 3 movies and revolves around Hiccup, the protagonist and son of the chieftain Stoik the Vast. Hiccup, unlike other Vikings, is not massive in size and strength but he makes up for it with his intelligent and crafty mind.

As the story unfolds, Hiccup encounters a Night Fury, a rare species of dragon that is deemed extremely dangerous by the elders of the village. Hiccup, in an aim to capture it, accidentally injures the dragon. While initially, Hiccup wished to kill the beast and win his dad’s trust, after meeting with the dragon, Hiccup realized that these creatures were not what they were claimed to be.

What is Berk in How to Train Your Dragon?

Berk is the village in which Hiccup and his fellow Viking villagers live. This fictional land is set up on high-rising stone structures. In the first movie, the village of Berk was shown as a town structured and prepared to take on any type of dragon attack, which took place in the city quite often. While during these fights we have seen many houses in the city getting burnt down, the citizens are handy builders and workers who can reconstruct or repair the destroyed buildings in an instant.

By the 2nd and 3rd movies, due to the friendship between dragons and humans, the Village of Berk, which was once a dragon-fighting village, had transformed into a dragon-loving village. The villagers had turned into dragon riders and dragons could freely inhabit the village, having a fun relationship with the humans here. With now dragons being a part of Berk’s inhabitance, dragon riders, under the command of Hiccup, became another line of defense for the village.

Geology of Berk in How to Train Your Dragon

According to Hiccups’ sarcastic entry in the opening of the How To Train Your Dragon franchise, the village of Berk is located twelve days north of "Hopelessness" and a few degrees south of "Freezing to Death" and is placed in the "Meridian of Misery" in the Barbaric Archipelago. The island of Berk is shown as an oval-shaped land and is quite small in size on the world map.

Berk has a unique landform structure and has very few sea stacks along with rocky arches and cliffs, beaches, waterfalls, streams, and several large forests. Initially, the island also had a cavern under the villages, but after the 1st movie, the area was turned into dragon stables. According to Hiccup’s narration, the island of Berk “snows nine months of the year, and hails the other three”.
