Who is Fiyero in Wicked?​

Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked is an American musical fantasy film that was released in 2024 and is loosely based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire. It was written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox and is the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name. The film was a critical and commercial success and was also nominated for 10 Academy Awards. The second film, Wicked: For Good, is set to be released in November 2025 after filming completed in January 2024.

Who is Fiyero in Wicked?

Fiyero is a beloved troublemaker who flirts and dances his way through life in the stage adaptation. The movie takes it one step further by adding a twist. He charms everyone across the film including Galinda, although his actions aren’t solely to impress her. In the film, he is out to give everyone a real sense of joy and thus uses his seductive, charming side with both sexes.

However, his backstory in the novel is completely different as compared to the musical and the film where he is a Winkie prince and Elphaba’s love interest in the latter two. He arrives at Shiz as the archetype bad boy character and impresses his own brand of freedom and carefree living on the students. This slowly changes after he meets Elphaba and Galinda, and by the end of the first film, he becomes a fan favorite.

Who portrays Fiyero in Wicked?

Fiyero Tigelaar is portrayed by English actor Jonathan Stuart Bailey who is best known for his work across film, television, and stage productions. Bailey began his career as a child actor in Royal Shakespeare Company productions and was performing in a West End production by age 8. His career on stage continued and thrived, which eventually led to his first big role on television in the early 1990s.

His first major film role didn’t come until the early 2000s, when he played Cyril in Five Children and It in 2004, earning several roles post that. That includes a recurring role on Bridgerton, Crashing, Broadchurch, and several other television roles. Not only that, Bailey has won several awards over the course of his career including a Laurence Olivier Award and a Critics' Choice Television Award as well as a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award & two Screen Actors Guild Awards.
