She graduated from Rutgers University in 1988 with a degree in Fine Arts in Theater. She began her career in theater and later transitioned to TV and film. She made her TV debut with a minor appearance in the show Guiding Light in 1989 and her film debut in Naked in New York in 1993.

She is best known for her role as Ally McBeal in the hit show Ally McBeal (1997–2002). She received a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a People's Choice Award, and 3 Primetime Emmy nominations for her role in the show. Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart met each other for the first time at the Golden Globe Awards in 2002. At that time, he was still married to his 2nd wife, Melissa Mathison. They started dating in the same year. They made their 1st public appearance as a couple at the Venice Film Festival in September 2002.

After that, they made many public appearances together with their kids. In an interview with Reader's Digest, Ford praised Flockhart as a parent and called her ‘the best mother in the world.’ He added, “She's a mother by choice — she adopted Liam before we met, as a single parent, which is an awesome responsibility to take.
