She made her acting debut in 1994 with her debut role in the feature film Heavenly Creatures at the age of 17. Lynskey earned rave reviews for her role in the film which earned her bigger roles in Ever After and Coyote Ugly by the start of the 2000s. That changed her career completely and Lynskey ended up moving to the United States to further pursue acting.

She earned her first role on television, making her debut on the small screen in Rose Red in 2022. She also starred in The Shield and then did a recurring role in Two and a Half Men, a role she had for 12 years until 2015.
