RAB is Regulus Arcturus Black, known to be a part of the House of Black.

Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and a fantasy movie franchise based on the novel series of the same name written by British author J. K. Rowling. The series has 8 movies, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2001 and culminating with the final movie titled Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011. The story revolves around the titular protagonist Harry who alongside Ron and Hermione studies at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry while a dark wizard, the antagonist Voldemort, steadily comes back in power.

Who is RAB in Harry Potter?

The character of RAB or Regulus Arcturus Black was mentioned in the last two movies of the series. RAB was a part of the noble House of Black in the magical world and was the younger brother to Sirius Black, Harry’s godfather. RAB was a pure-blooded wizard and had studied at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1972. He was sorted into the Slytherin house and later he became a death eater, following Lord Voldemort in his conquest for power.

After serving him up close and learning his vicious methods, Regulus decided to leave the ranks of the Death Eaters for good. Learning about one of Voldemort's Horcruxes, Regulus decided to steal Salazar Slytherin's locket to destroy it and keep a decoy in its place to deceive Voldemort. While his death in the series is not seen, it happens sometime after he acquires the locket. According to Sirus’s description in the books, he said “I doubt Regulus was ever important enough to be killed by Voldemort in person. From what I found out after he died, he got in so far, then panicked about what he was being asked to do and tried to back out. Well, you don't just hand in your resignation to Voldemort. It's a lifetime of service or death.”

Did RAB destroy the Horcrux?

RAB successfully managed to replace the real Salazar Slytherin's locket with the fake one in the Horcrux cave when he ventured with his house elf Kreacher in his search for the Horcruxes. While he successfully replaced the Horcruxes, he could not destroy it, leading to his end. Later in the story, the fake Horcruxes is discovered by Harry and Dumbledore in the cave, during the events of the Half-Blood Prince movie. Realizing that it was a fake, Harry and Hermione found a letter in the locket which was written by RAB to Voldemort.

The letter stated, “To the Dark Lord, I know I will be dead long before you read this, but I want you to know that it was I who discovered your secret. I have stolen the real Horcrux and I intend to destroy it as soon as I can. I face death in the hope that when you meet your match, you will be mortal once more. R.A.B.”
