Vance refused to renew his contract beyond the fifth season of the show. His reason was more personal than professional. For the entire time he was shooting for the show, Vance had to fly back and forth between New York City, where his show was shot, to Los Angeles, where his wife Angela Bassett lived. In an interview with TV Guide, Vance shared about this experience while being on the show. He said:

“Taking the role [of Carver] was a major family decision. Angela and I live in L.A. so I knew I would be flying back and forth across the country a lot since we don't go longer than three weeks without seeing each other. And we're always on the phone, every night and a couple of times a day, touching base”

After Vance refused to renew his contract and continue in the show, the character of Ron Carver was written out. Vance continued to work on many other projects and eventually won many awards. His role in “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” remains a fan favourite.
