By hook or by crook, Esme Prince somehow managed to cheat death when she tumbled from the parapet on Spoon Island in June. But where has Esme been for the past four month? It seems certain that her mind will be set on vengeance. After all she is (allegedly) the offspring of sinister serial killer Ryan Chamberlin (Jon Lindstrom). But is being a serial killer something genetics can pass along?
Esme's name has come up as a possible suspect of the recent attacks by some fans who noticed that despite all three victims having ties to Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), two of the victims, Ava Jerome (Maura West) and Diane Miller (Carolyn Hennesy), also share a connection with Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali). And although Brando Corbin (Johnny Wactor) did not have a direct connection to Trina, some viewers wonder if Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) may have been the intended target of the attack that took place in the alley at Charlie's.
Prior to Esme's tumble over the parapet, she was causing plenty of trouble around Port Charles. She had a one-night stand with Nikolas Cassadine (Marcus Coloma) while she was still in a "relationship" with Spencer Cassadine, and she attempted to kill the bartender who sold her the phone used to record Cameron Webber (William Lipton) and Josslyn's intimate moment in the cabin. Esme was also trying to keep her identity as Ryan's daughter a secret.
While Esme tried to skip town, Ava confronted her at Wyndemere for sleeping with Nikolas. She fought with Ava over a letter that would have blown Esme's secret wide open. The fight moved toward the parapet, and in true soapy GH fashion, Esme fell right over it. Nikolas tried to find Esme, but she was nowhere to be found. Nikolas and Ava assumed that she was washed out to sea. Now, where have we heard that before?
So, just how did Pohl find out about Esme's exit? She told Soap Opera Digest, "Our executive producer, Frank Valentini was like, 'Hey, by the way, I don't want to freak you out, but we're writing you off the canvas for a little bit.' I had no other context for a while. Then, later, he told me, 'You are being shoved off the parapet.' And then later he told me Ava was going to be the one who did it. From there, it was just sort of me always trying to find out new information because your brain sort of spins and scrambles when you hear something like that. You're like, 'Well, how long will it be until I come back?' There are a lot of questions that come to mind."
While Pohl was away from the show, she spent some time traveling. "I was able to go to Europe and travel around a bit. Then I went to see family that I hadn't seen since December. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to do that because I can safely say, never in my life have I had two months off! I tried to make the most out of it, not just with travel but I took acting classes, I saw friends I hadn't seen in awhile. I got to have so many new experiences, so [Esme's presumed death] was a bit of a blessing in disguise."
It looks like Esme was not just presumed dead on-screen but also off. Very few people behind the scenes knew that Pohl's exit was just temporary. Now that she has returned to the set, what does that mean for Esme? Well, the actresses' lips are sealed, so we will just have to stay tuned to General Hospital to find out. Pohl is also very appreciative of the love she receives from the viewers, and she loves the attention Soap Twitter has for Esme. "I look forward to seeing what new nicknames everyone comes up with for her on Twitter. I'm always gung-ho for new nicknames!"
