He rose to fame globally with The Twilight saga, appearing as Edward Cullen for the first time in Twilight (2008). Before Twilight he had done a notable role of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. In 2018 Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the film, said in an interview, "It was funny because they were both pretty shy and kind of a little bit nervous and awkward." The director conducted the audition and at the end of it, Catherine could see both of them vibing with each other, and also added, "It was pretty positive. After the end of their audition, I could tell that there was a lot of electricity and chemistry." Shortly after the release of the film in 2008, dating rumors began to float around but neither of them confirmed it at that time.

In 2009, during an award show, Robert and Kristen teased their fans with an almost kiss. After their little stunt on the stage, rumors of them dating became stronger.
