Steve Martin began his career as a comedian during the late 1960s. When he was twenty-three, he received his first Emmy for writing "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour." Later, he wrote for shows like "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour" and "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour," among others.


He began a long and highly successful career as a performer in 1969. Despite some difficult early years, he had found his stride by the mid-1970s. He became well known for his regular appearances on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" (56 performances between 1972 and 1992), "The Gong Show," and "Saturday Night Live." In addition to being wildly successful, his comedic albums won him numerous Grammys.

His stand-up performances were packing arenas by the late 1970s, so it made sense for him to turn his attention to feature movies. His first interest had always been movies, and "Live Action," the short film he wrote and starred in, went on to receive an Oscar nomination.
