Who are Jack Black’s parents?

Jack Black is the son of Thomas William Black and Judith Love Cohen. Both of them were aerospace engineers. Thomas and Judith married in the mid-1960s, had Jack in 1969, and raised him in California. His parents got divorced in 1979 when he was 10 years old. After their divorce, Judith married David A. Katz, and Thomas moved abroad, started a new family, and later returned to the United States to live on an apple orchard in Washington. In an interview with the Guardian, Jack talked about his parents’ divorce and said, “There's something about a divorce in that even if your parents still love you, the fact that they can't live with each other makes you feel there's something wrong with you.”

Both of his parents worked on the Hubble Space Telescope. Judith first studied math at Brooklyn College but switched to engineering. After 2 years, she transferred to USC while working as a junior engineer. She later joined Space Technology Laboratories, where she worked on the Minuteman missile and Apollo Lunar Module’s guidance system, helping Apollo 13 return safely, according to her son Neil. She retired in 1990. Before getting married to Thomas, she was married to Bernard Siegel. She met him when she was a freshman at Brooklyn College. They had 3 children together- Neil, Howard, and Rachel. They got divorced in the mid-1960s.

After retiring from engineering in 1990, she started a publishing company with her 3rd husband, David. They also wrote a book series called You Can Be a Woman…, which sold over 100,000 copies. She passed away from cancer on July 25, 2016, at the age of 82. In a 2011 interview with Guardian, Black talked about his parents and said, “My parents were very supportive of me and my artistic endeavors. My father and mother came to every school play I ever did. When I was 13, I talked my stepfather into driving me to auditions.”

Jack Black is married to Tanya Haden, a musician and singer. She is the daughter of famous jazz bassist Charlie Haden. She is also a painter who graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with an MFA degree. She formed an alt-rock band That Dog with her triplet sisters Petra and Rachel in the 1990s and later named it The Haden Sisters. She first met Jack in high school, but they started dating years later. After dating for a year, the couple got married in 2006.

In an interview with Parade, Black said, “I didn't date Tanya or talk to her or anything in high school. I was pretty shy. I just watched her from afar. We only started dating like 20 years after high school." On the Armchair Expert podcast, Black shared that his wife made the 1st move in their relationship. He said, “She came up to me and said, 'Hey, do you ever wanna go get dinner? I should give you my number.' And I was like, oh my God. Heaven opened up above my head, because it was like, this is the thing that I would always want to happen."

The couple has 2 sons together. They became parents when Haden gave birth to their son, Samuel. In May 2008, she gave birth to their 2nd son, Thomas. In an interview with People, Black talked about his sons and said, “I always encourage my boys to pursue their musical passions. I'm very proud of them whenever they flex their creativity muscles. And it's cool to be in close proximity with their mother's side of the family. We've had some jams together where we did a couple of concerts, and that was really fun, a really great experience."
