Who are Rami Malek’s family members?

Rami Malek is a popular American actor, born on May 12, 1981, in Torrance, California, United States. He studied theater at the University of Evansville in Evansville, Indiana. He made his acting debut with a minor appearance in the hit show Gilmore Girls in 2004. He made his film debut with the film Night at the Museum in 2006. He gained popularity for his role as Elliot Alderson in the critically acclaimed TV show Mr. Robot (2015–2019). He also won a Primetime Emmy Award for the role in 2016.

In 2018, he got his breakthrough in Hollywood with the role of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). He received praise for his performance in the film and won an Academy Award for Best Actor. Rami Malek’s parents

Rami Malek is the son of Nelly Abdel-Malek and Said Malek. His parents are Egyptian immigrants who moved to Los Angeles from Cairo in 1978. His father, Said Malek, was a travel agent and also sold insurance and his mother, Nelly Abdel-Malek, worked as an accountant. In an interview with The Guardian, Malek talked about his mother’s struggles for their family and said, “The school system in Los Angeles was not great. She would handwrite these long letters in blue fountain pen explaining our situation. She’d say, ‘I’m going to give my kids every opportunity possible.’”

He added, “I would hear stories about her being pregnant with my brother and me, and taking three buses – three different buses! – to get to work and back.” In the essay for TIME's 2019 list, Robert Downey Jr. praised Rami’s family for supporting his success. He wrote, “I contend that his mother Nelly, his father Said, his sister Yasmine, and his brother Sami are the foundational pillars to his rise. Mighta just been destiny … more likely it’s yet another testament to hardworking immigrants raising their kids right and pushing our culture toward the light.”

In an interview with GMA, Malek talked about how his mother initially didn’t want him to pursue acting. He said, “It’s tough to tell a mom you want to be an actor, especially when they've come from Egypt. They wanted us as kids to live the American dream and be doctors and lawyers. So the second I said I might do something that’s a little bit abnormal, it took a while for her to be able to sit with that. But she’s very proud at the moment, I’ll say that.”

His father passed away in 2006, and in 2019, when he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, he thanked his family and remembered his father in his acceptance speech. He said, “I think he's looking down on me right now, so this is a monumental moment." He added, “I am the son of immigrants from Egypt, I’m a first generation American - and part of my story is being written right now. And I could not be more grateful to each and every one of you and everyone who believed in me for this moment. It’s something I’ll treasure for the rest of my life.”

Rami Malek’s siblings

Rami Malek has an older sister, Yasmine Malek, and a twin brother, Sami Malek. His older sister, Yasmine Malek, is an ER doctor. She got married in 2016 and the ceremony was attended by many famous personalities. She stays out of the limelight but has attended a few Hollywood events with her brother. His brother, Sami Malek, is 4 minutes younger than him. He and his siblings grew up learning and speaking Arabic and practicing their traditions.

In an interview with The New Yorker, he talked about his and his siblings' childhood and said, “I felt that we stuck out like a sore thumb, as a family, our traditions. Going to school with that type of consciousness, and feeling like we were wearing our heritage on our sleeves, was always something that was confusing.” On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he talked about how he and his brother switched places in college. He said, “He calls me one day, I had just gotten back from theater school — we went to different colleges — and he calls me in a panic, saying, ‘Hey, do you know a Greek monologue from a Greek tragedy?' I’m like, ‘Yeah, of course, I’ve just been doing this for four years.’”

He added, “"He goes, ‘I need you to do this for my class, it’s going to get me the points I need to get me my degree. I’m short on these units, she’s offering points if anybody comes in and does this monologue.' ” According to People, Sami is an English teacher in high school. He studied American literature and African-American studies at UCLA and earned a Master’s in English education from Loyola Marymount University. He often attends award events with his brother.
