Geraldine Vishwanathan is playing Mel in the American superhero film Thunderbolts* which is scheduled to release on May 2, 2025.


Australian actress Geraldine Viswanathan rose to fame with roles in the 2018 movie Blockers, 2018's Hala, and 2019's Bad Education. She also appeared in the TBS comedy anthology Miracle Workers (2019–2023) and the television series Janet King (2017).

The Australian actress Geraldine Vishwanathan is playing Mel in the upcoming American superhero film Thunderbolts*. It's unclear if she will have the same supersonic sound capabilities as her comic book counterpart, Melissa Gold, also known as Songbird.


During Comic-Con, Viswanathan told Entertainment Weekly that her character is "in the world of Valentina [Allegra de Fontaine]" and that "I'm kind of her little right-hand man." And sort of like, 'Wait a minute? Who is this, and what's she doing? So we're really paired up, which is a dream — it's Julia Louis-Dreyfus!"


Who is Mel in Marvel comics?

Songbird, who was one of the original Thunderbolts' founding members and had a lengthy career filled with crime and villainy, was created by Mark Gruenwald and Ralph Macchio. Songbird, who has a black and white costume and long, pink streaks in her hair, is renowned for using her supersonic abilities to her advantage. Before taking a new position as a superhero in the Thunderbolts series, she had many appearances as a supervillain.

Viswanathan had an appearance in a Kodak TV ad when she was four years old. She traveled to Los Angeles for her first pilot season and made an appearance in Emo the Musical in 2016. She played Bonnie in the cast of ABC's drama series Janet King in 2017. As a reader in casting rooms, Viswanathan served as the reader for Crazy Rich Asians' Australian casting process.


Her career breakthrough occurred in 2018 when she was cast in the movie Blockers. She was described as "the film's breakout star" by Refinery29. She starred in the drama film Hala, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, and the Netflix movie The Package that same year. She was listed as one of the "20 rising stars among the blockbuster breakouts and small-screen discoveries who are shaking up the industry" in The Hollywood Reporter's "Next Gen Talent" list. Subsequently, Viswanathan landed several roles in cinema and television. Viswanathan was chosen to play Mel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Thunderbolts* in January 2024.
