Paul Atreides is considered to be Lisan al Gaib in Dune Part 2.

Released in 2024, Dune Part 2 is an American epic space opera film that is the sequel to Dune (2021) and continues the story of Paul Atreides on the desert planet Arrakis. Dune and Dune Part Two are the two-part adaptation of the novel, Dune, by Frank Herbert, and follows Atreides as he attempts to unite the Fremen people in an attempt to wage war against House Harkonnen. The film was released in February 2024 and became the sixth highest-grossing film of the year. It won several awards including two BAFTAs and was also nominated for five Academy Awards.

Who is Lisan al Gaib in Dune Part 2?

Across Dune and Dune Part 2, as well as in Frank Herbert’s novel, Lisan al Gaib refers to the messiah that the Fremen people are waiting for. It is their version of the Chosen One prophecy, although the Lisan al Gaib is only a prophesied messianic figure, as it is a fictional tale created by the Bene Gesserit. They did this in order to control the people and their culture in order to suit their needs so that when their Kwisatz Haderach was born, he would fit the role.

Despite that, Paul Atreiedes, over the course of the two films, is considered to be Lisan al Gaib by the Fremen and the Kwisatz Haderach by the Bene Gesserit. However, where the movies and the novel differ is when it comes to Chani’s part in the prophecy. Before Paul’s ascension into the prophesied messianic figure, he drinks a poison, the Water of Life, and falls into a coma. It is then revealed that Chani’s tears can be mixed with the poison to revive Paul and transform him into Lisan al Gaib.

Is Kwisatz Haderach and Lisan al Gaib the same thing?

Yes and no. While Kwisatz Haderach and Lisan al Gaib are different terms for the same prophesied being, the latter is something that the Bene Gesserit worked towards while the former is a myth that they, the Bene Gesserit, cultivated to control the people. They did this so that when their creation, i.e. the Kwisatz Haderach, was born, then the people would automatically accept him as their messiah and leader as he would fit their version of a prophesied figure, aka Lisan al Gaib.
