The American crime drama television miniseries Dope Thief is based on Dennis Tafoya’s novel of the same name.

The novel tells the story of Ray and his best friend, Manny, who have been close since they first met in juvenile detention nearly two decades ago. They have a scam going on: they pretend to be federal agents using some DEA windbreakers they found at a secondhand store and a few fake badges, robbing small-time drug dealers of their money and drugs before anyone notices.

The dealers they target are too little to seek revenge and too guilty to contact the police, so it's the ideal sting. No one needs to die, no innocent person is harmed, and Ray and Manny make a ton of money. However, it can't go on forever. They eventually pick the incorrect target and leave with hundreds of thousands of dollars, and they are being pursued by a big hitter who will stop at nothing to recoup his money. Ray is no longer concerned with the score. He wants to leave the scam and the life he believes he never chose. Another unpredictability is whether his partner, who was the victim of his most recent job, will let him.
