She was born to Beverly and Barry Bialik and attended the University of California, Los Angeles where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience.

According to her, because she did not have the marks to get into a medical school, Mayim Bialik then pursued her PhD degree in Neuroscience from UCLA. This inspired the makers to add the same while introducing her character in TBBT.
