Based on the South Korean drama show Squid Game, Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality competition television show in the United Kingdom. Competing for the highest single cash prize in reality TV history, US$4.56 million, are 456 players, the largest cast in television history.


Independent television production companies Studio Lambert and the Garden collaborated to create the Netflix original, with Studio Lambert handling physical production in the UK. For the first two weeks following its premiere, the show topped Netflix's list of the Top 10 English-language shows. Over 224 million hours were viewed in the first 21 days, with 20.5 million views in the first week, 11.4 million in the second, and 6.6 million in the third. Netflix revealed a second season order on December 6, 2023, before the premiere of the first season finale.


Casting of Squid Game: The Challenge


Following the release of an introduction video on YouTube in June 2022, applications for the series were publicly accessible. Netflix invited competitors from all over the world, but they were required to speak English. In September 2022, the streaming service issued its last casting call. About 81,000 people submitted applications to compete.


The show has the largest cast in reality TV history, with 456 actual players. The majority of players are male, in their 20s, and from the United States.


How well received was Squid Game: The Challenge?


With 85.7 million hours of streaming during its premiere week (20–26 November 2023), Squid Game: The Challenge was the most-watched Netflix series worldwide. That same week, it peaked at number one in 74 countries, including the US and the UK, and finished in the top 10 in another 19.


On Netflix, the series maintained its top spot for a second week (November 27–December 3, 2023), with 11.4 million views and 85 million hours of viewing. In 91 different nations that week, it was in the Top 10 on TV. With 1.5 million views during that week, the reality competition series also helped the original drama series Squid Game climb to number seven on the Non-English TV list.


Squid Game: The Challenge ranked third worldwide in the third week following its release. It resulted in 54.1 million hours viewed and 6.6 million views.


Where was Squid Game: The Challenge filmed?


In January 2023, the filming for Squid Game: The Challenge got underway on six enormous sound stages in Barking, London, and at Cardington Studios in Bedford, both in the UK.
