
English actor Ian McShane began his film career in 1962 with The Wild and the Willing, playing Harry Brown. His path to professional acting started earlier, when a teacher took notice of his talents and convinced him to participate in a school play. He later trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London; however, he left a semester before graduation to take on his first film role. As Harry Brown, McShane portrayed a rebellious student prone to getting inebriated and getting into conflicts with professors. He also appeared in Joe Orton’s Loot (1965) and later made his Broadway debut in a production of The Promise. For his performance in Larry Atlas’ Yield of the Long Bond, he received the Los Angeles Drama Critics’ Circle Award in 1984.
Since then, he has worked extensively in film, television, stage, and voiceover. His filmography includes productions such as Kung Fu Panda (2008), Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), and John Wick (2014). His television credits include Lovejoy (1986-1994), Deadwood (2004-2006), Kings (2009), and The Pillars of the Earth (2010).
