Lin was born in Taipei on June 30, 1952. Her full name is Joan Fin Feng-jiao. Before getting married to Chan, she used to be an actress in the Taiwanese film industry. For her performance in the 1979 film The Story of a Small Town, Lin won the best actress award at the 16th Golden Horse Awards, which is a prestigious award ceremony in Taiwan. After her marriage to Chan, Lin retired from acting. Lin and Chan’s son, Jaycee, was born on December 7, 1982.

Chan has talked about not being an ideal husband and admitted infidelity. In his autobiography Never Grow Up, Chan has written:
“In 1999, I made a serious mistake. When the news broke about an affair I’d had that resulted in a child, the media frenzy was like a bomb going off. I wanted to phone Joan but I didn’t know what to say. I wouldn’t be able to explain this.”
