Burton was born in Sterling, Virginia, United States, on July 1, 1982. Her mother, Lisa Kay (née Blankers), is a Minnesota-born real estate salesperson, and her father, James William "Bill" Burton, is a U.S. Army veteran.
Among her four siblings, Burton is the oldest, having three brothers. She graduated from Park View High School in 2000 after serving as the treasurer of the student council her sophomore year, vice-president her junior year, captain of the cheer squad, president of the student council, and homecoming queen her senior year. After attending Fordham University and New York University, Burton earned her degree in 2004.
