His father was a popular figure in the local jazz scene in Gloucester. John’s passion for music influenced Simon, helping him develop an early interest in creativity. He died at the age of 77 in 2023 due to a short illness.

In an interview with the BBC, Pegg paid tribute to his father after his death. He said, “Music was such an important part of my relationship with dad. I always marveled at his passion. He was a face on the Gloucester music scene. He was such a lovable man, beloved by many. A lot of the time, we would be listening to music, and he'd introduce me to stuff. He played a song by Randy Newman to me once to show me how it felt having to leave me as a child, which I know was difficult for him. The way he'd articulate that was through a song. He said, “Me and Maureen were at the same gigs or dating the same people, but always missing each other. You might get to within a metre of your soulmate, but for some reason that last little inch you don't make. I've met mine, and I'm very lucky. At MCM Comic Con, he shared that his wife Maureen was not happy with his body transformation for the film Inheritance.
