The oldest and strongest of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Death, also referred to as the Pale Horseman and the Angel of Death, was a primordial, ancient being with great might. Death has been with God from the beginning of time, and he is so old that he cannot recall which is older, God or himself. He is the embodiment of death and the idea that all living things are mortal.

The Winchesters later called forth and chained Death to kill Castiel after he had been corrupted by the souls of Purgatory. Despite his release, he provided a method for the angel to send the souls back to Purgatory.

Because of his suffering under the Mark of Cain, Dean called him back a few years later to have him killed by Death. Death offered to take Dean somewhere he would still be alive but not a threat in exchange for Dean killing Sam, but he refused, claiming that doing so would release the Darkness. But to save Sam, Dean used his scythe to murder Death. Billie, the Reaper, was reborn as Death's substitute after Castiel killed her. After her death, Betty briefly took Billie's place.

Death’s background in Supernatural

How and when Death came into being is unknown because of the complex nature of his age. Death claimed that he could be as old as God or even older because he has no memory of his age. According to Death, he was present when God created the Leviathans, the earliest monsters, and even "personally found them entertaining."

When Alastair breaks one of the 66 Seals in a rite, he hints at the presence of death. "He doesn't really ride a pale horse, but he does have three amigos," he says, adding that he borrowed his scythe from an "old friend." Although Death doesn't physically appear in Abandon All Hope..., Lucifer's ritual frees him from his imprisonment in that episode.

Death is the chief of all reapers. To serve Lucifer, a great number of reapers gathered in the place where he was to release Death. Death is typically imprisoned and shackled in a magical casket that is 600 feet below the surface of the earth. According to Bobby Singer, "The last time they hauled him up, Noah was building a boat." The Host of Heaven only let him go when God had a big plan, like the Great Flood.
