Ruby is a character from the American fantasy horror series Supernatural. She is portrayed by Katie Cassidy and Genevieve Padalecki in the series.

She first appears in the third season, helping Sam and Dean Winchester battle their fellow demons. The writers created her to further develop the personality of demons in the series. She gains Sam's trust during the fourth season and starts teaching him how to use his psychic abilities to defeat demons, but Dean is still wary of her intentions. The fourth season concludes with the character's death. Ruby reappears in the fifteenth season through flashbacks and a visit to the Empty, the afterlife of the demons and angels.

Who is Ruby in Supernatural?

Ruby was a demon who longed for Lucifer's return. She protected the last "special child," Sam Winchester, and had him ready to break the last seal and become Lucifer's host while Lilith broke the seals. This was how she and Lilith planned to rescue Lucifer from his cage after Azazel's death. Only she and Lilith knew about this scheme, which is why Hell considered Ruby a traitor.

Ruby initially allied with a frightened Sam by promising to help him in rescuing his brother from his dangerous situation. However, after this was proven to be false, Ruby offered to teach Sam to be able to kill Lilith in retaliation for Dean's exile to Hell.

Ruby solidified her hold on Dean during his time in Hell by being helpful and 'helping' Sam, saying what he wanted to hear, giving him demon blood, and supporting him through his grief to the extent that their bond grew stronger and eventually became sexual. She made him into Lucifer's ideal vessel and tricked him into killing Lilith to break the last seal, but she was slain with her own knife after the brothers discovered her deception.

In The Empty, Castiel meets the demon and awakens her after discovering that Ruby had the Occultum before her demise. Ruby asks Castiel to rescue her from the Empty so that she can be resurrected in return for the location. She asks Castiel to at least try to release Ruby, and he agrees.
