She developed an interest in acting at a young age of 5 and started performing in community theater productions written by her mother. Gentry studied theatre at the John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School in Augusta, Georgia, and later attended Emory University, where she studied drama.

Gentry started her acting career by working in a PSA ad for 'Don't Text and Drive – Pay Attention' in 2014. Her early acting career included roles in short films like Lone Wolf Mason (2015) and Driver's Ed: Tales from the Street (2015).
