Hanno Brühl and Marisa González Domingo are Daniel Brühl’s parents. His father, Hanno Brühl, was a German TV director and documentarian, born in São Paulo, Brazil. In an interview with Interview Magazine, Daniel shared how his father influenced his acting career. He said, “Well, I started to do theater when I was a little boy at school, and then, I think because my father was a documentary filmmaker and worked for German television, I was of course fascinated by what he did.” In an interview with Independent, he said, “If my father had been a butcher, then probably I wouldn’t be sitting here.”

His mother, Marisa González Domingo, is a Spanish teacher. In an interview with Gentleman's Journal, he talked about his Spanish mother and said, “We had a strong tie to Spain and went there three to four times a year.” He added that his mother “missed Spain so badly that we spent all of our holidays there. Even in Germany, we always spoke Spanish, ate Spanish food, listened to Spanish music.”

Daniel is fluent in many languages, like Spanish, German, Catalan, Portuguese, and French. In an interview with Interview Magazine, he credited his parents for helping him become multilingual. He said, “Well, my first languages are German and Spanish because I was brought up by a Spanish mother and a German father, so I always spoke both languages at home. I’m very thankful that I was brought up in a bilingual house.” In an interview with Gentleman's Journal, he also shared, “Growing up, I was always around French family members. My two German uncles married two French women; one is from Paris, the other from Toulouse. We grew up with a blend of languages and cultures, and for that I thank my parents.”

He has 2 siblings- a brother named Oliver and a sister named Miriam. In an interview with Collider, he talked about his brother while promoting 'Race for Glory: Audi vs. Lancia.' He shared about his personal connection to racing and said, “Yeah, I was into it, but not too much. My brother was a much bigger Formula One fan. He infected me a bit with that virus, and I always loved cars.”

In an interview with Redbull, Brühl shared his wife’s advice on sleeping issues. He said, “I follow the advice that my wife gave me. She is a psychologist and has worked on the subject of sleep. Don’t toss and turn in bed. Get up and do something until you are tired enough to go back to bed again.” In an interview with the New York Post, he shared how he took help from his wife for his role in The Alienist. He said, “Being married to a real ‘alienist’ made my whole relationship even better. “

He added, “I learned so much from my wife’s profession by playing this part, and she enjoyed being able to help me and support me. She gave me precious information and interesting things to read. I did my first hypnosis session in Season 2 through someone she knew. I learned a lot about [my wife] and about my role in general.”

In an interview with The Dolder Grand, Brühl talked about his Instagram usage, his wife, and children. He said, “Oh, you have to set limits with Instagram. Especially with children. I’m on there a few times a day. But my rule is never to look at my phone more than twice a day. That’s important when you have children. Our one-year-old has already discovered the magical pull of this device. You can put five Duplo blocks in front of him, and he will still choose the glowing screen. It’s terrifying. My wife is extremely disciplined, and I’m trying to be too. I only look in secret (laughs).
