Felicitas Rombold is from Germany and is a former model. She has also appeared on Broadway and has experience in the performing arts. Rombold pursued a Ph. D. in psychology from Freie Universität Berlin. Her research interests include affective neuroscience, emotion recognition, and psychophysiology.

Bruhl and Rombold started dating shortly after the actor ended his engagement with Jessica Schwarz around 2010. Felicitas was pursuing her master's degree back then, and they met in a Berlin bar. The couple made their first public appearance in the same year, but they like to keep their lives private. They had their first son, Anton, in 2016 and subsequently got married in a secret ceremony where guests were asked not to carry their cell phones to keep the celebrations intimate and personal. The couple had a second son in 2020.

During the shooting of “The Alienist: Angel of Darkness,” Brühl consulted with Rombold to understand his character's psychological depth better. The couple occasionally posts pictures of their family on Instagram. In April 2024, the couple made an appearance during a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where Rombard’s baby bump indicated that the couple was expecting their third child together.
