At the corporate offices in New York, his character is introduced as a wealthy executive who has a lavish suburban home, a wife named Rachel, and two children: a son and a daughter.

David accepts and understands the differences and shortcomings of Regional Manager Michael Scott, despite leading a different lifestyle from the people of the Scranton branch. He also values staff colleagues Jim Halpert and Toby Flenderson. In the sixth season, after Sabre absorbs Dunder Mifflin, he is dismissed. Later, he sells to the U.S. military his patent for a toy vacuum named "Suck It" for $20 million. He then buys Dunder Mifflin for an undisclosed amount of money and takes over as CEO in the eighth season's finale episode, "Free Family Portrait Studio."
