Shogun cast

Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, Shogun is a historical drama television series that is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. The book was adapted into a miniseries in the 1980s. The current version is now receiving widespread critical acclaim. That was showcased by its success at the Primetime Emmy Awards with Shogun winning awards in 18 different categories, including Outstanding Drama Series. It set a new record for the most awarded single season of television in Emmy history and even won four Golden Globes, including Best Television Series – Drama.

Shogun cast

Set in 1600s Edo era Japan, Shogun revolves around a political battle in the country which is interrupted when John Blackthorne ends up shipwrecked on the shores of Japan. The culture clash combined with his relationship with Lord Toranaga, Lady Mariko, and several other characters end up driving the story.

Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga

Born on October 12th, 1960, Hiroyuki Sanada is a renowned Japanese actor who is well known for his roles across film, television, and stage. The prolific actor has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career including a Golden Globe Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Japan Academy Film Prize, and two Hochi Film Awards amongst others. He made his acting debut at the age of 5, gaining prominence for his roles in action films as an adult before transitioning into more dramatic roles.

Cosmo Jarvis as Pilot Major John Blackthorne

Harrison Cosmo Krikoryan Jarvis, born on September 1st, 1989, is a British actor and singer/songwriter. Jarvis was born in America but spent most of his life abroad in the UK and made his acting debut in 2009 as a voice actor in the film The Alley Way. Since then, he has acted in several films and television shows including Lady Macbeth, Persuasion, Peaky Blinders, and more. Not only that, Jarvis has also released five studio albums with his last one released in 2013.

Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko

Born on June 11, 1992, Anna Sawai is a Japanese actress and singer who started acting at the age of 11 as the title character in the Nippon TV production of Annie. In the years since, Sawai has transitioned into film and television, making her film debut in 2009 in the film Ninja Assassin. Beyond that, she has also starred in Pachinko, F9, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and several other productions.

Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige

Tadanobu Satō, better known as Tadanobu Asano, is a Japanese actor, director, and musician who has an extensive career working across both Japanese and international films. Born on November 27, 1973, Asano has been nominated for five Japan Academy Film Prizes, twice for Best Actor alongside several other nominations throughout his career. He is best known for his roles in Hollywood films like 47 Ronin, Thor, Hirokazu Kore-eda's Maboroshi no Hikari, and more.

Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari

Born in Tokyo on July 27, 1974, Takehiro Hira’s career has spanned across film, television, and stage productions ever since he made his debut in 2001. He is best known for his roles in NHK taiga drama Atsuhime, Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai, Ace Attorney, and more. Beyond that, he has also had notable roles in Lost Girls & Love Hotels (2020) and Snake Eyes (2021), and also played a minor part in Gran Turismo.

Tommy Bastow as Father Martin Alvito

Thomas Derek Bastow is an English actor and musician best known for his roles in Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging, as Joe in the British Telecom (BT) adverts, and as the lead singer in the band FranKo. He made his acting debut in 2005 with roles in several television commercials before getting his break in both film and television in 2008. Since then, he has acted in several productions including EastEnders, Shogun, The Crossing, and Never Back Down: Revolt.
