The Walking Dead premiered on October 31st, 2010 with an episode titled “Days Gone Bye”.


Based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman and developed by Frank Darabont, The Walking Dead is an American post-apocalyptic horror drama television series. It premiered in October 2010 with the story revolving around a group of survivors attempting to survive a zombie apocalypse. The series was met with critical acclaim for both the quality and the performances of the star-studded cast, running for over a decade before concluding.

The Walking Dead premiered on Halloween in 2010 with a 90-minute pilot episode that was titled, “Days Gone Bye”. The pilot episode introduces the world to Rick Grimes, his family, and the situation the sheriff finds himself in when waking up from a coma to a different kind of world. Not only that, Grimes discovers his family is missing and is then forced to battle a zombie apocalypse to find them.


The pilot episode was very well received and had over 5.3 million viewers watching it when it was released. That was partly because of the way the producers and AMC promoted the show, even coordinating zombie invasion events across the world. It eventually became the most-watched series premiere in AMC’s history and critics even compared it to Lost, a critically acclaimed television series.

The Walking Dead premiered on October 31st, 2010, and ran for nearly 12 years before concluding in November 2022 after 11 seasons. That was after it established a universe filled with the potential for prequels and sequels, and became one of the longest-running shows in both AMC and television history. The series has a total of 177 episodes throughout its tenure.


The final season had 24 episodes but was released in three parts; with episodes 1 to 8 released between August and October 2021 followed by episodes 9 to 16 which were released between February and April 2022. Episodes 17 to 24 were released from October 2022 and concluded in November 2022 with its final episode, “Rest in Peace”.
