Survivor places a group of people in an isolated spot where they have to care for themselves by making food, a fire, and shelter. The competitors participate in tasks that test their mental skills, such as solving puzzles and endurance tests, or their physical skills, such as swimming and running, to receive rewards and immunity from elimination.

As the competitors are voted out by other players, the contestants are gradually removed from the game until there are only two or three left. After that, the eliminated competitors cast their votes for the victor. They receive the $1,000,000 ultimate prize ($2,000,000 in Winners at War) and are coined the "Sole Survivor" title.

How successful is Survivor?

The show has been very successful in the United States. Its first 11 seasons (competitions) ranked among the top 10 most-watched television seasons from 2000–01 to 2005–06. Being the first successful and highly watched reality show on broadcast television in the United States, it is widely regarded as the pioneer of American reality TV and is considered one of the greatest programs of the 2000s.

The show has received nominations for 63 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Sound Mixing in 2001 and Outstanding Special Class Program in 2002. When the category of Outstanding Reality-Competition Program was added in 2003, the series received four nominations. When the award was first given out in 2008, Probst won Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program four years in a row. The series was listed as one of the top 100 TV programs ever in 2007 by Time magazine. It was listed as the 39th "60 Best Series of All Time" by TV Guide in 2013.
