The Walking Dead: Dead City is a horror drama TV show set in a post-apocalyptic world. It was made by Eli Jorné and is the 4th spin-off of the superhit Walking Dead franchise. The 1st season of the show premiered on AMC on June 18, 2023, and had 6 episodes. The show brings back popular characters Maggie Rhee and Negan Smith as they travel through a ruined Manhattan to find Maggie’s kidnapped son, Hershel.

The 2nd season of the show premiered on May 4, 2025. The show explores themes of survival, guilt, and revenge. But as the show highlights the unexpected partnership between Maggie and Negan, fans have been left wondering about the absence of Negan's wife, who was introduced in the final season of The Walking Dead. Her sudden absence in Dead City raised questions. Let’s take a look at where Negan’s wife is in The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Annie Smith, played by Medina Senghore, was introduced in the 11th season of The Walking Dead as part of the Riverbend community. She was the love interest of Negan. She accepted him for who he was and stayed by his side, even when others doubted his change. By the end of the original show, she was pregnant, and the couple left to start a safer, more peaceful life. However, she was not seen in The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 1.

In episode 3, titled “People Are a Resource,” Negan reveals the reason behind Annie’s disappearance. He tells Maggie that he sent Annie and their son, Joshua, to Missouri for their safety. He explains that his past kept putting them in danger, and rather than risk their lives, he chose to separate from them. After sending them away, he doesn't know if they are okay or if they reached Missouri.

In episode 5, titled "Stories We Tell Ourselves," Negan tells Perlie the reason why he did the murders. He reveals that his wife, Annie, was robbed and beaten up, which is why he took revenge on the five people who hurt her. After that, Annie was not mentioned much in the show, and it is believed that she is in Missouri. Her character was not physically present in Season 1, but she was mentioned many times.

Will Negan’s wife be in Season 2?

As of now, there is no official confirmation that Negan’s wife, Annie, will appear in Season 2 of The Walking Dead: Dead City. Even though Annie’s story is important to Negan’s past, there is no confirmation that she will return in the new season yet. Season 2 is expected to focus more on Negan’s growing conflict with other survivors, especially the new threats introduced at the end of Season 1. There is still hope for audiences that Annie can be in future episodes, as Morgan mentioned Annie and Joshua in an interview with Deadline. He said, “We talk about them and they’re definitely part of the story. I’ll tell you that.”

Also, according to the premiere episode of season 2, Negan learns about his wife and kids' whereabouts. In one scene, Dama tells Negan that her people heard about a woman and a child in Tennessee. They couldn’t reach their destination because of flooding in the Mississippi River, so they settled in Tennessee. Now there is a possibility of Negan’s reunion with his family as Dama said, "I hate spoiling the surprise, but now that they're en route to the island, I suppose you'd want to make your preparations."
