When Donna initially shows up, she scolds Michael for being disruptive in her business. When she asks him to go, he says no, and she stops. Michael approaches her, and after a brief argument, they strike up a conversation and begin flirting. Michael receives a complimentary lunch when Donna "randomly" chooses his business card from a fishbowl. She is always inquiring about Michael's return time to pick up his lunch.

Donna comes into the workplace, supposedly to purchase office supplies. Her sales agents Jim and Pam work together, but Michael's flirty interference ruins their pitch. The sales pitch is taken over by Michael. Michael doesn't know if her flirting shows real interest or if it's just a tactic to get a better deal. In the parking lot, Michael returns the barrette that Donna left behind. After Michael apologizes for his actions, he discovers that Donna is genuinely interested, and they kiss.

Later, when Michael believes she is cheating on him, their relationship starts to deteriorate. Pam shows him photos of Donna and another man cuddling to back this up. Donna admits that her relationship with Michael is an extramarital affair when Michael questions her about it. The office informs Michael of his situation and advises him to end his relationship with Donna as she is unfaithful to her spouse. Michael rejects these requests. He later recognizes the error of his ways after the office staff retaliates by acting repulsed toward him. When Donna is at a motel waiting for Michael, he sends her a text message formally ending their relationship.
