Ellie was born in 2009 to Anna and her father's name is unknown. An infected woman bit Anna on the thigh during the birth of Ellie. Ellie was exposed to a trace amount of the Cordyceps brain infection as a result of the bite. Anna quickly severed the umbilical cord before Ellie could absorb a lethal amount, but she showed no symptoms.
The two were found hours later by Anna's childhood friend and Firefly leader, Marlene. Anna handed her switchblade to her daughter, Marlene, and asked her to look after Ellie. Ellie was taken to the quarantine area in Boston after Anna was shot in the head by Marlene.
Ellie was raised as an orphan in the Boston QZ at the FEDRA military preparatory school. Growing up, Marlene watched over her while she led the Fireflies to free the Boston quarterback from FEDRA. Ellie was instructed in the usage of a pistol at school, however it was taught with a one-handed grip instead of a two-handed one.
Ellie was attacked and bitten on the right arm when she and her companion Riley broke into an abandoned mall in the area in the late summer of 2023. She did not transform, though, because the Cordyceps that had grown with her from birth created a chemical messenger that led the infection to believe she already had the disease and prevented it from spreading.
Ellie had to kill Riley when she started to transition. Marlene saw Ellie wandering back to Boston and took her to a Firefly safehouse. Ellie was given the alias Veronica by Marlene, who also took away her switchblade and luggage. For a few days, Ellie was locked up and watched by the Fireflies in the safehouse to see how her infection was developing.
