Why did Riri become Ironheart?
In the Marvel Comics Universe, Riri Williams is a certified super-genius who attends MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) on a scholarship. She is inspired by Tony Stark and his Iron Man suit after he saves her and her stepfather during a Skrull invasion of Earth. Not only that, soon after she enters MIT and a few years later at age 13, her best friend, Natalie, and stepfather are killed in a drive-by shooting,
This, combined with her adoration for Stark and his Iron Man suits, leads to Williams deciding to make her own suit of armor. Working alone, she proceeds to create a suit of armor after reverse engineering Stark’s Mark 41 design and does so using stolen materials from her college.
However, after she is discovered, she escapes in the suit and then proceeds to prevent two inmates from escaping prison. Williams eventually returns to her mother’s house, continues working on the suit, and is eventually sought after by Stark himself, who hears about the suit and is impressed. He proceeds to support her decision to become a super-hero, and she soon takes up Iron Man’s mantel after he’s left in a comatose state post the second superhero Civil War.
Is Ironheart replacing Iron Man?
Yes, Ironheart is effectively replacing Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and Iron Man, as Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams effectively does so in the Marvel Comics Universe. However, in that case, it takes place after the second superhero Civil War, which leaves Stark in a comatose state. Following that, Williams takes up Iron Man’s mantel and uses the name suggested by the A.I. version of Tony Stark, aka Ironheart.
Thorne, the actress who portrays Riri Williams in Ironheart, has also revealed that Downey Jr. has given her and Ironheart his full blessing. In an interview with Empire, Thorne revealed, “Robert Downey Jr and I spoke just after we wrapped, and he shared some very lovely words about my journey. He told me how excited he was and that he’s rooting for it, too. I literally got two thumbs up. It’s really reassuring to know you’re not embarrassing Iron Man.”
Is Ironheart related to Iron Man?
No, Ironheart bears no relation to Iron Man or Tony Stark aside from the fact that Riri Williams was inspired by Stark and his Iron Man suit, which eventually led her to create her own suit of armor. Williams’ parents are Demetrius “Riri” Williams Sr. (her namesake) and an unnamed mother. Her mother remarries after the death of her biological father, who passes away alongside her best friend Natalie in a drive-by shooting, which partly inspires Williams to become a superhero.
